A. There are tons of scholarships that go unclaimed each year. Many $400, $500 or $1000 scholarships never even get applied for because people think it's chump change and not worth applying for. Well, get a few of those $500 scholarships and it'll really make a dent in your tuition bill. Do a search on scholarships, search your major, your ethnic heritage, your town, your parents employers, your employer, hobbies, high school, local chamber of commerce/rotary/ lion's club etc. Left-handed? There is a scholarship out there for you! Older woman returning to school? There are scholarships out there for you. Do combined searches on more than one criteria "hispanic women aviation scholarships" etc. Go to the library and ask the reference… [cont.]

What are my chances at getting a scholarship?
Q. I am an African American female entering my junior year at a school of the arts high school as a vocal major. I have a 3.8 unweighted GPA (on a 4.0 scale) and a 4.3 weighted HPA (on a 5.0 scale). I have taken 3 AP classes so far (human geo., world history, and music theory) and passed the exams, but before I graduated I plan on taking 9. I am involved in a number of extra curriculars, especially in the arts community. I also do a lot of community service. I am taking my SAT and ACT this coming year, but right now I am enrolled in a SAT summer workshop. For college, I am interested in music performance, law, journalism, and history. The schools I'm considering are Brown, Emerson, BC, BU, NYU, Wellsley, etc... I need to have almost all of… [cont.]

A. Wow, you have an impressive resume there. I found out there are some scholarships you can apply for at I applied for all of them yesterday, and I'm hoping I get one! (: Anyone regardless of what you are studying or what school you go to (as long as you are going or will be going to a college) can qualify. They range from $10k to $50k I think.

Is there a full-ride scholarship, grant, or any kind of financial aid a deaf student can receive?
Q. I am a junior in high school and I was born deaf. I currently am enrolled in three AP classes of English, US History, and Biology along with Pre-Calculus and Competitive Speech and Debate. I have been involved in three clubs, high school softball the entire time, competitive softball and still keep up a 3.7 grade point average. I am an aspiring journalist and wish to go to an University of California or an California State University after I graduate. Ever since my freshman year colleges have been chasing after me, and I already have narrowed it to a good list of five. What worries me though is how college will get paid. My parents quit their jobs for six months just so we could get more family time, remodel the house, et cetera so… [cont.]

A. I'm deaf and went to C.S.U.N. The Department of Rehab. paid my tuition in full including books. The requirement was that I had to be a full time student. Is there a reason why you aren't interested in using that route? Did you know that CSUN has the largest center on deafness on the West Coast with so many wonderful services. Try contacting someone there for some advice on other ways to get college paid. You can receive money from Social Security Disability while in school. The only requirement is that you prove that you are deaf. Apply for both S.S.D. and S.S.I., the S.S.D will be the majority of the payment while the S.S.I. is a little extra on top of that and gives you free healthcare (Medi-Cal). If you only receive SSD, you will… [cont.]
